DANUBE4all - Preparatory works at the Middle Danube Demo Site

Within the DANUBE4all project, DANUBEPARKS is coordinating activities at the Middle Danube Demo Site in Sződliget (Hungary) in close cooperation with the Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate.

Last week, the project team successfully completed the first on-site preparatory step for the planned ecological groyne adaptation. As part of this phase, trees that had grown on the groynes were removed. This intervention is a necessary prerequisite for the upcoming adaptation of river structures aimed at improving hydromorphological conditions and ecological functions of the Danube River.

At this stage, the site may appear visually disturbed. However, this is a temporary condition, and the planned ecological groyne adaptation is expected to deliver clear long-term benefits for river dynamics, habitats, and biodiversity.

Although the works were initially planned to be finalised by the end of the year, the next implementation phase must be postponed due to currently low water levels in the Danube, which do not allow safe and effective execution. Activities will resume as soon as hydrological conditions are suitable.

Step by step, the project continues to contribute to a healthier and more resilient Danube River.
