NATURA 2000 Experience Exchange: Danube Delta Team visits Bulgarian Protected Areas

NATURA 2000 is a European network on protected habitats. All protected areas from the DANUBEPARKS project represent NATURA 2000 sites, in total covering a high number and a relevant area of all sites at the Danube River.

Due to comparable frame conditions Danube Protected Areas work on similar monitoring programs and NATURA 2000 issues, generally on local level. Transnational cooperation is needed to strengthen each Protected Area in these efforts and to ensure coherence.

Within the DANUBEPARKS project, Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority is responsible for elaborating a report regarding Danube-wide monitoring concepts for NATURA 2000 sites. In this respect Danube Delta staff needs to participate actively in sharing experiences and know-how transfer among all partners regarding the implementation of NATURA 2000 concepts.

In the period 5th – 7th November 2009, a team from Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority participated in a study visit in the Protected Areas in Bulgaria, for sharing experience in the implementation of NATURA 2000. The members of the project team visited Persina Nature Park, Kalimok-Brushlen Protected Site and Srebarna Nature Reserve and had meetings with representatives of Persina Nature Park Directorate - Belene and Regional Inspectorate of Environmental Waters (RIEW) – Ruse to discusse the experience in management of NATURA 2000 sites.
