In the framework of the LIFE WILDisland project, the lead partner of the project (Donau-Auen National Park, Austria), visited the Táti islands in Hungary on October 5th. The visit was hosted by experts from the Duna-Ipoly National Park (DINPI).
The experts first visited the target site of a newly developed DANUBE4all project (Horizon 2020 programme) close to Vac, where the DANUBEPARKS association is planning to provide the partial opening and adaptation of two existing groynes in order to improve the hydrology of the area and provide better fish habitats. The planned start of the DANUBE4all project is January 2023.
After that, the two teams headed upstream, crossed the Danube on a ferryboat and took a motor boat from Esztergom to the Táti islands, where DINPI has already started the transformation of an artificial forest plantation on an area of 2.6 ha. The site will be prepared for planting already this autumn and planting indigenous tree species (e.g. oak, ash, elm, poplar, etc.) will start in late autumn 2022 or early spring 2023.
The experts also discussed the existing infrastructure on the islands, the road access, the current forest management plants and possibilities to maximize the impact of the WILDisland and DANUBE4all project activities and cooperation.
